Viles Florides

Pals, Vila Florida

Viles Florides is an initiative of the Confederation of Ornamental Horticulture of Catalonia (CHOC) that promotes the transformation of corners, villages and cities of Catalonia and Andorra through urban green and landscaped spaces.

This movement aims to showcase and highlight the natural and scenic richness of the country through public recognition of all gardening projects, urban furniture and recreational spaces that, both in the public and private sphere, become an example to follow.

Pals has several population centres that blend into cultivated fields, rice paddies, wetlands, extensive pine forests, a dune system of great ecological value, and the Mediterranean forest area of the Quermany mountain.

Urbanistically, the Pedró area combines medieval, cobblestone streets with landscaped corners, as well as the rest of the town centre with various landscaped squares and avenues, which in addition to their aesthetic and environmental value provide shaded spaces during the hottest periods.

The private gardens of residential areas are also part of the urban greenery, along with the children's playgrounds located at different points throughout the municipality. In the Llevadora neighbourhood there is an extensive natural meadow that serves as a biodiversity reservoir.

Landscaped flowerbeds and roundabouts beautify the access roads to the beach. Maintenance is the main task, combined with the replacement of plants and trees that better adapt to the current climate emergency, that can withstand water scarcity and at the same time contribute to biodiversity.

In the last two years, dead or deteriorated trees have been removed and up to 100 new trees have been planted, combining species that provide shade with those also appreciated for their foliage and play of colours. The drought situation forces us to optimise irrigation water use, and to make use of reclaimed water for the survival of trees and landscaped areas.
