NATURE AND THE LANDSCAPE

Pals, in its natural setting, offers us a idyllic landscape of contrasts, light and colour.

The highest point in the area is the mountain of Quermany, from here we can see the medieval town settled on the top of the hill known as Mont Aspre; the large agricultural plain; the marshes where a number of bird species nest in spring; the rice fields and the beach, with its protected area of dunes.

The sunsets and spectacular views that can be seen here have made Pals and its area an attractive destination for photographers and admirers of landscapes. The gentle relief of the region, with few hills, makes it a perfect place to enjoy the traditional attractions of sunshine and the beach, but also long excursions on foot, horseback or bicycle that are suitable for all the family.

Pals, together with the towns of Torroella de Montgrí, Bellcaire d’Empordà, Palau-Sator, Ullà, Fontanilles and Gualta, in the region of Baix Empordà, and  l’Escala in the region of Alt Empordà, make up the Nature Park of Montgrí, les Illes Medes i el Baix Ter.

The pools of Basses d’en Coll near Pals, a protected area within the Nature Park, is an ecologically valuable area of marshland with dunes and native vegetation (willows, elms, reeds and reed beds) where rice is grown. A number of species of birds (little bittern) nest there along with other animals, in a protected space within this nature reserve. There is a bird observatory among the plane trees where the river Daró used to flow,  and it’s a pleasant trip to make either on foot or by bicycle.
