THE JOSEP PLA TOUR OF PALS

This route was prepared by the Fundació Josep Pla of Pals. The visit is accompanied by readings from the author inspired by locations in the town. Josep Pla will escort us from the Torre de les hores, the church of Sant Pere and the town walls to the Pedró, renamed in honour of the writer from Llofriu as the Mirador Josep Pla, where the author brought his guests and showed them the best view of the Empordà.
“I have spent so many hours at the Pedró in Pals, sitting on the step of the boundary cross, that I cannot but confess that I always love it there: whether the air is clear or when the wet southerly winds bring a hint of red that blurs it a little.”

CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS AND THE TOWN OF PALS: THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE DISCOVERY OF AMERICA

This visit was prepared by the Cercle Català d’Història. It reveals the alleged departure of admiral Christopher Columbus from the port of Pals: an interesting theory that has attracted plenty of controversy. It is strange that there are so many things we don’t know about a figure as famous as Christopher Columbus. The idea draws on contemporary engravings showing the ships bearing Catalan flags, and the city of “Palus” as walled with a tower in the centre, which coupled with the recent discovery of a 15th century seal from the Royal Port of Pals, have lent weight to this theory which is gradually attracting more and more interest.
